Here are some of our favourite walks in Grasmere to get you started:
1. Grasmere Lake Loop: Easy & Scenic
Duration: 1–1.5 hours
Distance: Approx. 3.5 miles
Highlights: Lakeside views, Wordsworth’s grave and gentle paths
This circular route is perfect for a gentle morning or sunset stroll. Starting from the hotel, head past the churchyard where William Wordsworth is buried, then follow the well-marked path around the lake. You'll walk through peaceful woodlands, open meadows and alongside the shimmering water, an ideal walk for those wanting something light but rewarding.
2. Alcock Tarn: Moderate with Views
Duration: 1.5–2 hours
Distance: Approx. 3 miles
Highlights: Hidden tarn, stone steps, panoramic valley views
A brilliant “short but satisfying" hike, this route takes you uphill behind The Grand at Grasmere and through scenic woodland before arriving at Alcock Tarn, a peaceful mountain lake surrounded by craggy fells. It’s a little steeper in parts but offers outstanding views of Grasmere valley in return.
3. Easedale Tarn: Moderate Adventure
Duration: 2.5–3 hours
Distance: Approx. 5 miles
Highlights: Waterfalls, streams, mountain backdrop
One of the most popular local walks, Easedale Tarn offers a balance of adventure and accessibility. The trail begins in the centre of Grasmere village (a few minutes’ walk from the hotel), winds past Sourmilk Gill waterfall and climbs steadily to the serene tarn tucked between the hills. Perfect for those looking to experience the Lake District's raw beauty without a full day commitment.
4. Helm Crag (The Lion and the Lamb): Iconic & Rewarding
Duration: 2–3 hours
Distance: Approx. 4 miles
Highlights: Rock formations, sweeping views, photo worthy peaks
Perhaps Grasmere’s most famous fell, Helm Crag is instantly recognisable for its rocky summit, often said to resemble a lion and a lamb. Though relatively short, this walk packs a punch with its steep climb and stunning views over Grasmere and beyond. The descent brings you back along Easedale Road, just a short stretch from the hotel.
5. Rydal and Grasmere Circular: Historic & Varied
Duration: 3–4 hours
Distance: Approx. 6 miles
Highlights: Two lakes, Rydal Cave, Wordsworth’s homes
For those wanting a mix of lakeside walking, history and exploration, this circular route takes you from Grasmere to Rydal Water, passing Rydal Cave, Dove Cottage and the beautiful Rydal Mount. With plenty of photo stops and optional detours, it’s a great way to explore more of the area at a relaxed pace.
